seeing other people's reactions when I tell them I have cancer.

I had spots that looked like bruises on my skin and my left sinus was completely clogged. I had none of the traditional symptoms of leukemia.

I have 6 months of chemo:
1. Daunorubicin, Vincristine, Asparaginase, Prednisone
2. Cytarabine, Etoposide
3. Methotrexate
months 4, 5, and 6 are a repeat of months 1, 2, and 3. I also had 6 doses of intrathecal methotrexate (chemo injected into my spine).

Good Morning Bloggers!Views: 2697

Or as some would say “bleaders” (blog readers). I know my post is overdue. It was a rough weekend friday and saturday. Friday I think was my worst day yet. I just felt like crap. Everyone said I looked like crap. (that’s always nice). Saturday wasn’t much better. I was able to sit and have a nice breakfast with my grandparents at the Freeport Bakery, but was finding it hard to keep up with the conversation. I had to lie down. Anne’s friend Jan came up from the Bay Area and they had a nice lunch and a walk and a much-needed convo. I kicked it on the couch and tried to work on my knitting. I missed hanging out with the girls, seeing Sonia’s new house (I swear one of these days) catching up on the gossip.
Sunday was a great day! I woke up feeling really good and decided to go roller blading at Discovery Park with Lauren. (Incidently probably not the best idea for one who has blood clotting issues) It was lovely to be outside, near the river, and although it may have been sometime in the 1990’s when I last strapped on a pair of skates (see Lauren’s comment on the last post) I didn’t suck that bad. We had a little brunch at Tower Cafe on the patio, a Sacramento landmark and a restaurant I have been wanting to check out, and it was the perfect thing. What a great day. When I got back home, Anne’s brother Paul was sitting on my porch! He came up from Nevada City on his way back home to SF to say hi. It was really nice to talk to him and catch up on his family news (his daughter is off to college in a few weeks). Anne’s week with me ended uneventfully. We had a really nice relaxing time, mostly reading, cooking, chatting, watching movies. I think we have a symbiotic cooking relationship; similar styles and desires of what to eat! FYI for those of you in Sac, the co-op on S has the most gorgeous heirloom tomatoes right now and I have more basil than I know what to do with (yes, I already made pesto). Anne also has seen me feeling the worst through all of this, and I think can see the deterioration and a glimpse into what’s ahead. I am sleeping more and having shorter periods of activity during the day.
My aunt Suzanne arrived from Montana on Tuesday and a new vibe has entered the house. She is very high energy and she’s a physician so she has a whole different take on what I should and shouldn’t be doing. She has already called my doctor and asked what we can do this week. My blood counts are up and good and he said I can do WHAT I WANT! Obviously within reason. No skydiving. So I went to Target yesterday and did other errands that needed to be done.
I am trying to do something about this hair situation. I got some kind of special shampoo and treatment (Nexiom) that I guess was developed for cancer patients. We’ll see. Working on that “grow hair” goal. Suzanne also brought me various head adornments: chinese-style baseball cap, panama straw hat, indigo turoeg turban wrap from a trip where she rode camels? Anyway, I look fabulous in indigo. I’ll post a pic soon. :)
I am slowly but surely getting through my list of people to get back to, so hang in there. Christian, it was wonderful to talk to you yesterday; it’s been way too long. Plopper and Micah, so great to see your comments on the blog…plopper I’m getting your (((vibes))). Would love to know what the two of you are up to these days. Bri has my emai address so give me a shout out.
I also want to send a big THANK YOU to my offiice for hosting a bake sale for me today. You are all great friends and your support has been amazing. Also a big thanks to those who are supporting my friend Alia in her hike for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Eileen and JP and Heidi you really are generous and incredible.
To all those who are finishing the bar exam today….CONGRATS! Have a drink for me and enjoy the next few months of freedom.
Much love, peace, hugs,
Josi
