seeing other people's reactions when I tell them I have cancer.

I had spots that looked like bruises on my skin and my left sinus was completely clogged. I had none of the traditional symptoms of leukemia.

I have 6 months of chemo:
1. Daunorubicin, Vincristine, Asparaginase, Prednisone
2. Cytarabine, Etoposide
3. Methotrexate
months 4, 5, and 6 are a repeat of months 1, 2, and 3. I also had 6 doses of intrathecal methotrexate (chemo injected into my spine).

Good days and bad daysViews: 2980

Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days. It seems weird to post when things are going well and I’m at home, and not much is going on health-wise. I have been feeling pretty well since I left the hospital on monday. Anne, my step-mom, is here with me. We have been doing a lot of great cooking!
Yesterday was a good day. Anne’s parents were in town, on their way through to Nevada City for a Storytellers convention. We had just a mellow day chatting at home and they did some errands with Anne. Donsy came to my softball game with me where the Misdo Mafia took the season championship! YAY! We finished the season almost undefeated with only one loss. It was great to be out in the world and to see everybody on the team. We had some of the girls from work over for taco night. Anne really outdid herself with the food! Homemade tomatillo salsa, pico de gallo, carne asada on the grill, authentic mexican garlicky rice with cilantro, pinto beans with serrano chiles, she even went to the tortilla factory and bought fresh corn tortillas, some of which she used to make chips, que bueno! I added my famous guacamole, Mimi made some flan and it was a bit of a fiesta!
Today was not a good day. I haven’t been sleeping very well and have been tired all day today. I was exhausted after the fiesta and was in bed by 10:30 but was awake at 5am. I went for a walk around the capitol (my pic line pocket is the perfect size to hold my ipod nano!) around 6:30 just to keep myself occupied. We had a nice breakfast at the Freeport Bakery (the cakes are incredible looking there if anyone has a birthday coming up) but I could barely keep up with the conversation. I have been feeling achy all over, including my teeth (weird) and have been getting cramps in my feet. Today I feel like I am on chemo for the first time. :(
My doctor is taking me off the asparaginase treatment because my fibrinogen is low. Translation: no more shots because my blood might not clot and i could hemorrhage. Not to worry, I am being careful not to cut myself and I will get to go a whole week without a doctor’s appointment! YAY!
The other good news is that I got DVR today and HBO so there will certainly be no shortage of entertainment going on. I increased my netflix too so now I get like 6 at a time or something ridiculous. I also just got a really nice giftcard to blockbuster from my aunties on Roger’s side so it is movie central chez josi.
I am reading a great book right now that is keeping me in a culinary mood: The Soul of a Chef by Michael Ruhlman. Thanks Lauren. I decided that for my birthday this year which happens to almost coincide with the end of my chemo treatments, I am making reservations at French Laundry (do you think it takes more than 7 months?) and telling Thomas Keller just to cook for me. I am telling the Sommelier to bring me what he thinks I should drink with the courses. Anyone want to join me?
Miss all of you!
Peace, love, and good thoughts
josi

Hi gal ,Glad you up and about, even if for a short time.
Boy you made me gain 10 lb. just by reading about the good food.

I think about each day when I check the blog.
you have that beautiful smile.

Hug to you and yours!

sherri

Your posts really do make me hungry! And I’m down for the dirty laundry in Feb :) Have you seen the movie Shooter? If not you must rent it and see Marky Mark. :)

excuse me, did you say french laundry? You know nothing would keep me away. And definitely the chef’s choice is the way to go. I am going to start saving my ducats now.
sorry to hear about your aches and pains dude.. wish I was there to keep a heating pad handy and make you popsicles. I am buying a bigger suitcase for my august trip to bring up the le creuset.. (I think the inaugural use will have to be with you) and the bocce. It is hard for me to imagine you awake and strolling at 630 am. Sheesh.

I hope yesterday was a good day for you—I had so much fun! FYI, blog-readers, Josi and I went roller blading yesterday morning at Discovery Park. I have to say, I was a little reticent to lace on those skates, since the skates themselves are circa about 1992, and I haven’t actually had them on my feet in at least 5 years. But, we set out on our intrepid way (after deciding that the one wrist guard we had between the two of us should probably be left behind, as [should it be worn] then Murphy’s Law would definitely dictate that one of the non-guarded wrists would be seriously injured). We were a little shaky at the outset, but once we got started it was pretty smooth. I’m a little sunburned today, but other than that none the worse for wear. Thanks for getting me out on the trail, Josi. I know days are up and down, so I was so happy to be a part of an up day. I love you,

Lauren

p.s. you’re great.

lauren—i am noting the excellent use of “circa” from the joanna/josi vocab and i am certain she is enjoying this post from you in all aspects. thanks for a really great day!

p.s. you’re fabulous

Lauren,
josi beat me to it.. I was just about to post to you regarding your use of circa.. plus then the add-on of 1992. I love to cite the early 1990’s. Send me your address. I am hitting up maine this week.. circa thursday morning, as I land in boston at 645 am and will get to maine at some point..lobsters (or as they say in RI, Lobstah) are heading your way. :)

Josi – I literally laughed out loud when I read about you putting your Nano in your pic line pocket. That’s HYSTERICAL. I can see it….and the little smile on your face when you made that discovery. Priceless.

Keep on keepin’ on…..and keep an eye out for a package!

Much love!

I am sooo sorry you have been feeling sick. Hopefully it will be fleeting pain. I think it’s because Dan is sitting in the bar right now. I’m sure his stories will be back on track soon :)

I wish I could ease your pain :( I will be sending some tunes asap (as soon as I can find a ride to get some more blank cd’s-DOH!) We have a pile of goodies for you but for some reason have let it accumulate rather than send them to you as we get them. I think I’ll bite the bullet and send you a small care package tomorrow (cd’s to arrive at a soon later-date)

I hope your body starts feeling better soon. I wish (as I’m sure we all do) we could take your pain and spread it out so you wouldn’t have to bear it all. Unfortunately, the world won’t let us, so please please please let me know if there is anything else I can do to ease your experience.

For the reservation: I’m down for French Laundry. I dont have money but that’s what credit cards are for . . I mean, once in a lifetime experience right? Although, Jo may have to order for me since I can’t read all of those fancy-pants French names :)

Just wanted to say that I’m trying to send good vibes in your direction!
((((((((((((((((vibes))))))))))))))))))))

Aight, I’m back. I just finished my last trail out of a 5 week stint. Big fat NG. Man, I didn’t think I had it in me. Alas, Rouse had those jurors mesmorized like little snakes dancing to the tune of his mighty flute. I think my neck even began to gyrate at one point.

I am moving into my new house this weekend, Love. I want you to know that it has a lot of space and a cool little pool in the back. If you want to get away, just for even a few hours and pretend that you are at some cool West Sacramento resort, please come over. I have great sunscreen.
