seeing other people's reactions when I tell them I have cancer.

I had spots that looked like bruises on my skin and my left sinus was completely clogged. I had none of the traditional symptoms of leukemia.

I have 6 months of chemo:
1. Daunorubicin, Vincristine, Asparaginase, Prednisone
2. Cytarabine, Etoposide
3. Methotrexate
months 4, 5, and 6 are a repeat of months 1, 2, and 3. I also had 6 doses of intrathecal methotrexate (chemo injected into my spine).

international woman of mysteryViews: 1339

Greetings from Sutter General! Yes, I survived my first day of hospital admission, with merely some pin pricks to show for it. I arrived here on the 4th floor west of Sutter General around 11 in the morning. They got me set up in a shared room at first while they worked on getting me my own private digs. Meanwhile, they took some blood, took some more blood, fed me some lunch (yikes) and told me to hang out while I waited for the IV people to give me a catheter. The first piece of good and mysterious news of the day was that my bone marrow biopsy did not show any Leukemia cells. Hmmmm…. (says I, says the nurses, says the doctor) where are they coming from???
The mysteries continue…the IV girls show up to insert my catheter. They find a vein with no problem and then spend the next hour poking me with needles filled with novacaine (which HURTS) trying to get this wire into my vein. 4 attempts on my left arm, 2 attempts on my right arm with no success. The IV lady says in 24 years she has never had this much trouble with a vein. great.
So after a less than restful night of about 3 total hours of sleep, they send me down to the xray room to get my catheter in. Bing, bam, boom, 15 minutes and I’m hooked up. So back to the room I go for an afternoon of spinal taps and chemo (oh joy). But alas, the catheter drama continues as I am bleeding all over where they inserted the wire. But never fear, they got me cleaned up and back in business. The spinal tap was less painful than the bone marrow biopsy which was less painful than the root canal I had 2 weeks ago. Go figure, no wonder people fear dentists.
They are testing my spinal fluid for leukemia cells in my central nervous system (CNS for all you DA’s) and also put some chemo directly into my spine to kill any that are there. I’ll keep you all posted on the test results.
I have had a few visitors from the office who brought wonderful gifts! Thanks to my misdo crew, especially Heidi, for the incredible basket. It was perfect. My favorite comment on the card came from Ernie. :) Thanks also to the public defender crew for the sweet card/frame and flowers. You are all amazing.
Bottom line, my spirits are up, I feel good, and I am loving all the posts and emails from you.
peace and love
Josi

Hello friend! Lan found you on this website (not sure how) but I am glad to know that I can drop you a line. Keep your spirits up and know that we are all thinking about you!

Hi Josi! Remember me? Im friends with Alia and Jo mama. I found you through Aaron, who happens to be my wedding photographer through a reference from jomama. I just wanted to say even though Ive had the pleasure of meeting you a few times its always been fun times. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Hi Josie – It’s your friend Steph – long time, no talk. Lan saw this site and filled me in. I just wanted to say that my prayers are with you and that if you need anything, us San Diegans are always here. We miss you Josie.

I log onto the computer every night to see posts from Josi. Wow, none in the bone marrow, that’s great news! I have to say I’m shocked that the PD’s office sent you a card or anything. That would not happen here in Vegas! I have my first big time prelim tomorrow. I’ll send you and email on how it goes tomorrow. Have a great night! I wish I was there to bring you goodies!

hey, went running tonight around mission bay… had some jo time, sat on the sand and stretched my aching legs, and thought of me, you and mara in the ocean with rolled up jeans. After you are through kicking some giant leuk squid butt, let’s get mara, our jeans, and our passports, and go stand in the meditteranean. Just a thought. With lots of olive oil all over. And maybe you can eat all the fresh tomatoes you want. or we will cook them.

by the way… BIG HUGE day in the Supreme Court on Monday -do you have cspan at that hospital? I need to discuss with you and your Dad.

yes, i have cnn, not cspan so it may involve wolf blitzer interpreting supreme court opinions but its better than nothing. i do have internet access now tho’ so no worries, can get the “real” news online.
jeans, ocean, you, mara: 1) i am listening to the mix i made for mara about that night right now before i read this post (weird) and 2) YES to the MEDITERRANEAN. i will have my tomatoes raw, thanks. :)
